Sony NEX 6 vs Fuji XE-1

I must say that this is one of the most interesting match ups to come out in quite a while.  Both cameras are of a similar size, both have the Sony 16MP sensor (Fuji's has some of their own magic fairy dust added), both use the Sony XLA OLED viewfinder (the NEX-6 having a faster refresh rate), both come with interesting kit lenses (Sony's collapsible and wide 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 vs the fast aperture Fuji 18-55mm f2.8-4) and both are premium priced in the mirrorless market.

However the Fuji is quite a bit more than the Sony.  With the kit lens the Fuji is a full $400 more (MSRP $999 vs $1399).   Is it worth it?  That remains to be seen, but I think for Fuji it will be a stretch to show customers the extra value.

As a side bar, I've seen used X-Pro1 bodies now starting to really drop in price on the used market.  Most are going for $1,100 or less now, a little under a new XE-1 with tax.

Sony NEX 5n with Leica 50mm Summicron M

  1. Yup. Price is one of the big factors that prevents me from looking at the Fuji, and to some extend, the OM-D EM-5. I think the NEX-6 strikes a good balance between price/features. Sure the Fuji probably has a better lens (but not as wide), and the OM-D's kit lens is probably no better than the Sony 16-50. I think we will see price drops on most of the mirrorless cameras after Christmas. The NEX-5R has already dropped a $100.

    1. I agree. Will be very interesting to see what happens in the new year. I thin the right price for an X-Pro1 is the XE-1's pricing, while the XE-1 should match up to the Sony NEX-6. Fuji is very obviously trying to position themselves as a premium brand in the market, rather than low end.

    2. The only things separate the XE-1 is the interesting sensor, but I think anyone not shooting ISO 3200 or over won't notice too much of a difference. The XE-1 is in a tough spot, wedged in with EM-5 and NEX-6, all are great cameras and have their own strengths but unfortunately all the desirable features are not in the same camera. Personally, I strongly belief the XE-1 will drop by $200 right after Christmas. It just can not compete at the current price point.

    3. My understanding with the Fuji is that it doesn't use an AA filter on the sensor, so images are sharper, which for high resolution lenses like the Leica 50mm Summicron would be a boon, at any ISO. I spoke to someone at Henrys a couple weeks ago and the X-E1 is still back ordered. I agree the price will drop, but more likely timing will be 2Q next year.
