D70 compared to a compact

Even though it is now over 8 years since the D70 first came out, there are very few compacts that can match it for image quality, certainly not under $400 anyway.  With a good Nikon lens, such as the 50mm f1.4, the results can still be exceptional. 

I loaned my D70 and the 50mm to my brother in law, and compared to his reasonably nice recent Panasonic compact, he was shocked at how good the results were with this combination.  You can pick up a D70 body for about $150 nowadays, which in my books, is amazing value.

Leica CL vs Sony NEX - side by side

In the last post I wrote about how similar the Leica CL and Sony NEX seemed to be.  Here’s a shot of the two cameras side by side, both with compact Voigtlander lenses.  Interestingly, the effective focal length of both cameras is quite similar – a 21mm lens on a NEX has an equivalent full frame field of view of 31.5mm.

I took the shot with an extra cheap D70 and Nikon 18-105mm VR lens I just bought (more on this later).  It was lit with a Nikon SB-800 Speedlight.
