Head spin

Due to failing light and a slowish lens, I didn’t quite get these shots completely sharp, showing plenty of camera shake.  When I was reviewing this and other shots with my wife, she commented that these made her head spin.  I tend to agree.

Canon GX1

The Canon GX1 is an interesting camera because in many ways I am not sure what it is supposed to be.  It  has an almost APS-C sized sensor with a 15-60mm fixed lens (about 28-105mm in 35mm format).   So is it a like a Canon G11 with a giant sensor?  Or is it like a Sigma DP1 or even a Fuji X100 with a zoom lens instead of a prime lens?  I am not sure either.

Here’s the rub for me – for the $700 ask you can also get a Canon Rebel with a similar sort of lens and feature set.   The only advantage I see is size, but the lack of interchangeable lenses doesn’t do it any favours in my book.  May be this is Canon’s EVIL answer, but without the IL bit; a way to differentiate it from the Rebel series, which significantly reduces development on a new mount and series of lenses.

It’s interesting to see other SLR makers diverge their EVILs away from their SLRs – both the Pentax Q and the Nikon 1 will not harm the sales of their SLR cousins, though it is reputed that the NEX had a significant impact on Sony’s Alpha SLR lines.

Kid blur

Following kids around with a camera is lots of fun.  A different way to capture the speed with which they run around the house is to shoot slow shutter speeds to create some blur.  Given that inside is often much darker than outside in the daytime, it’s not hard to achieve.

These shots of a toddler were all shot around 1/6^th second.

Window Portrait

On a recent trip to Kingston ON, I took my camera along on a short stroll near the hotel.  I saw this face painted above a window on one of the heritage houses, and it greatly intrigued me.  Who is she?  Why was she painted on the window?  Was it actually someone, or just a pretty drawing?  Unusual and very intriguing.

Dinner Snaps

I’m sure I thoroughly annoy my relatives by taking photos during dinner, so here’s a couple shots of us chowing down on some great Indian.

The NEX with the Voightlander 35mm f1.4 Nokton does an excellent job of rendering these low light shots, and its making me hungry!

Elmar Panoramas

Late last year I took some landscape shots with the Sony NEX and the Leica Elmar 50mm f3.5 of rural Eastern Ontario.  After looking at them I realised that they would work extremely well as panoramas, so I cropped them to suit.  Together they make an interesting series.
