MISSION:

Snapshot Voyager is about my own personal photography journey. I am always looking to try something new, inquisitive as to how it works, and to the end results I might achieve.

New Year's Photographic Resolutions

This coming year my main aim is to move away from some of the nice manual focus Nikon glass I have and replace it with the AF equivalent.  Actually trading up to new or newish second hand won't be too big of a jump.

Here's the current idea:
1) Nikon 35mm f1.4 Ai-S -> Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art Series
2) Nikon 85mm f1.4 Ai-S -> Nikon 85mm f1.4 AF-D or Sigma 85mm f1.4
3) Nikon 135mm f2 Ai-S -> Sell and not replace - too close to Nikon 80-200mm f2.8

I also have a Nikon 105mm f1.8 Ai-S which I am unsure of what to do with

Chasing a toddler around with fast manual focus glass is close to impossible, and invariably I miss far too many shots.  Even in general outdoor photography the same applies, so I've ended up not using theses lenses much.

Other things I am looking at doing are buy the Sigma 19mm f2.8 for NEX and possibly find a better quality Sony NEX to Leica M helicoid adapter.  Weird things happen, so I am sure there will be something else that will pop, and my photographic adventure will continue.

  1. Should take a look at the Sony E 50mm f1.8. I just got one yesterday and it is fantastic. It's currently $299 at Henry's but the downtown store did not have stock. I just asked Downtown Camera to price match it.

    1. Nice! I thought about that lens, but I have MF 50mm's (mostly Leica) coming out of my ears so decided to pass. OSS would be handy though.

    2. I do too, but this lens is sharper than pretty much any of my manual focus lenses wide open. AF is abysmal on the NEX in low light, so as to how useful AF is, is really a question of how much light you can get.

    3. Impressive. Even more than your Leica 50mm Summicron R? The NEX 5n AF isnt great, but I heard the NEX 5r and and NEX6 are much better. Any thoughts?

  2. My 50 Summicron is in parts (wanted to adjust the infinity focus because it couldn't reach infinity on EOS mount but having trouble putting it back ;) but if I remember correctly, the Sony 50mm is no worse. In terms of focus, the NEX-6 is no better than 5N. The phase detect pixels only helps with continuous focus.

    1. Interesting. My 50mm Summicron M Type 4 is by far and away the best lens I have on any mount. Sharpness, rendition, bokeh are all outstanding at any aperture.

      Interesting also that the AF on the NEX6 has no better AF than the 5n. Absolutely no reason to upgrade to a 5r then.

    2. Never used the M version of the Summicron, which I heard was one of the best of the 50mm lenses, if not THE best. Yup, AF on the NEX-6/5R has little improvement for static AF. Pity, really.
